Gavin Harrison is just such a brilliant drummer on so many levels.

Don't get me wrong, I love him, but sometimes people make it seem as if no other drummer exists. But I guess fanboys/girls do that all the time.

In the contemporary progressive music scene, he undoubtedly is a major figure though. Where he is over-hyped, in a sense, is that some fans might lack the knowledge related to such a level of drumming, and instantly come to consider him "the greatest", or any insignificant title of that kind. He definitely is a very intelligent and brilliant musician, and I might be doing a bit of overgeneralization anyways. Along with the likes of Marco Minnemann and, to a lesser extent, Martin Axenrot (for his work on Heritage, mostly), he is among the most admirable drummers of the scene in my opinion.

I'd say for the main beats in Cheating the Polygraph and Bonnie the Cat alone the 'hype' is justified.

His new "Jazz" live album is pretty lame but man he kills it on the drums.

You mean his big band rearrangements of PT songs? I thought it was a great idea, and the songs I've listened to were entertaining
And yeah, I thought I had 5'd this too, but there's still a few moments here that I don't completely appreciate. I might reconsider my rating, it's been a while since I listened to the album.

^ya thats the one i'm talking about. It was an intersting idea but it felt kinda contrived and formulaic after like 2 songs.

@Oni: He's definitely brilliant, and I like his sense of groove combined with his technical ability. Though I feel he's becoming more aggressive in his playing nowadays. His subtle ghost notes, drum fills, etc. were his biggest strength imo, but now he seems less like a jazz drummer in a metal band and more like a metal/hard rock drummer with jazz ability.
I thought Minneman was a little overrated for a while. He has the technical ability but his fluidity felt a bit lacking on the last SW album and Aristocrats one, but his performance on the new SW album is really good.
Axenrot has made such a huge improvement since Watershed. Love his drumming.

I'm clearly in the wrong business, I'm sat on sputnik writing reviews and commenting for nothing when I could be making $89 an hour and still having enough time to raise the kids good beat the kids good and tie them up!
