"To Porter, With Love" is fucking epic. I wish they would have included it on the album proper. It would have fit nicely directly after "Tapestry." Scurrilous stil blows me away after a hundred listens and some change.

I don't see how this album is good, I mean it's not really an improvement in any aspect.

Nothing wrong with a plateau is your plateau is quite high in the first place.

Malice, I think, musically, this is a huge step forward. Protest sounds a lot more mature, patient, and, for once, fully in control of their skill. Since Fortress, they have learned how to tame down some of their more sporadic impulses and meld them seamlessly and effectively with a truly heavy, groovy, bluesy rhythmic foundation. The riffs are woven intricately throughout the tunes on this record--see "Tongue Splitters"--and, thusly, are imbued with much more power and bite. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If Protest The Hero continue down this path sonically and hand the lyric writing duties back over to Arif, their next record could be fucking epic. Imagine if Scurrilous contained a concept and lyrcis as interesting as the cover art. It's really the only thing keeping me from rating this a 5.
As for the screaming, I'd have to say, let's just wait and see. It worked well for me on this record. Despite the protestations of the masses, I think Rody is a pretty extraordinary vocalist. His voice has character, and, though I can see why and how it could rub some the wrong way, for me, his voice cariries a certain degree of earnestness and nobility. There are those that cannot surpass the abrassiveness of Tom Waits or Bob Dylan or Black Francis or Isaac Brock, but I am certainly not one of them. Not to say that Rody Walker is anywhere near as talanted as any of these artists; I merely wish to call attention to the similarities in their receptions by listeners.
Here's hoping to that legendary fourth LP.

its not that its the lack of screams that bother me actually, its the fact that rody just sings way too much. if he layed out on some parts and left them as instrumental sections, the lack of screaming wouldnt bother me as much.

Insurrection, I completely agree. In all honesty, probably the first ten to fifteen times I listened to the album, I only heard the guitars. Rody does take up an awfully large portion of the soundscape, now that you mention it. Just by glancing at the lyric book, it's hard to imagine all those words fitting within the paramaters of a 5 minute song. You're right. They need to learn to streamline and econmoize their vocals. This is exactly why, as we both agree, they needed "To Porter, With Love" after "Tapestry." It would have made this album so, so much better. What do you think about my assertion that their next album will be their best if Arif writes the lyrics?

I think we're all forgetting the fact that Rody Walker is dreamy here, guys.

Sadly, i still have yet to listen to this. If its got less screams, theres a good chance i wont like it as much. Because while Rody has a seriously good voice, i loved their screams mixed in every once in a while

Holy shit. "To Porter, With Love" should have been on the album proper. I think that bears repeating. If "To Porter, With Love" were included on this album, placed just before "Dunsel", it may have been 5 material. I've listened to it about 20 times today, and it blows me away every time.
