Oh man that beat/bass is utterly delicious. Vox are in my allergy zone, but rhythm section is amazing agreed.

I wouldn't put Soul Coughing in the same bracket as everything else mentioned - but I do like that album and the vocals really suit the sound, the songs would be half what they are with more 'regular' vocals...or no vocals
|

I wouldn't put Soul Coughing in the same bracket as everything else mentioned because they are not trip hop.

well that album sure feels like trip hop to me. In a lot of parts at least.
|
| |
Soul Coughing has a fair bit of trip hop influences but I mean, so did a lot of alt-rock around that time

I already thought I knew the name DJ Cam, turns out it was from this collab with... DJ KRUSH!

Such an incredible tune.

" trip hop influences"
No, they were influenced by hip hop.

And trip hop was influenced by hip hop. So it could very well be trip hop.
|
| |
..... hip hop was influenced by disco. So Soul Coughing could very well be Disco.

Oh shit I like disco now. Seriously though, great discussion guys.
'So if we refine the parameters to quintessential trip hop albums that pioneered phase 2 (the dark, gritty, band oriented chapter) what would yall nominate as a potential classic aside from dummy and mezz?'
I'm not entirely sure what this means being a self-confessed music history pleb, but Lamb's s/t? For a post-millennium vote I'll go with 'Son Lux - At War With Walls & Mazes', which bizarrely still only has 90 votes on here.
But I've probably mis-understood the questions, idk.

It's why my (edited) comment came with a bunch of qualifiers, I'm scared it'll get torn to shreds, lol.

Yeah genres don't really matter much in the end. Enjoying that DJ Cam record quite a bit! He does have a tendency to introduce a completely unrelated musical idea - seemingly - at random halfway through his tracks though.
Lamb is cool and it certainly counts I'd say!

Now I want to tear Lordepots to shreds because I never saw his original question.
