There are some Scotts Burns interviews in the Cannibal Corpse documentary. Overall it's worth watching because of all the history of the band and DM in general... it's on youtube.

Yeah it's like a 3 "disc" thing right? I love watching it. I like that Metal Blade uploads these entire documentaries on Youtube for free.

mike didn't invent the blast beat, but I guess he had his signature blast where he was blasting snare, kick and hi-hat simultaneously (think it's called hyper blast or something). I'd say sandoval was the first to play blast beats like we know them in metal, but there were hardcore punk bands doing it before that too.

probably not, but he was using it A LOT on effigy. others were mostly doing the traditional blast, alternating kick and snare.

yes, you see at 0:30 when he switches his right hand onto the snare, that's what I was talking about.
|
| |
Yeah the way he keeps the intensity on the snare despite switching hands is crazy

its true it was much less common back then, only a handful of drummers were doing it, but i wouldnt say he was the first.

well he was definitely not the first one to play it lol, like Bill Ward was doing it live in the 70s when he was coked up, but nobody used it so regularly. listen to effigy now, it has that blast in every song. the first one starts like 2 seconds into the record haha.
"Always thought It was Pete who pioneered it actually "
there were bands doing it before, but I'd agree that Pete was probably the first one who turned it into a real, solid beat you could keep time with, and not just a burst of single strokes during the chaotic parts like some hardcore and crossover bands were doing it.
