Strange, this album was basically love at first sight when I first got it

Yeah, it actually took me only about 2 listens to get into this. Once I realized that "A Crater to Cough In" was a reprise of the whistle intro, and that the melody is half-connected to the singing part in "Interview at the Ruins", I was hooked. I'm a sucker for things like that.

That, for me, is why this is a 5. So we're both suckers.

Actually regarding the album, this is one of the ONLY albums that I can listen to repeatedly and still pick out new things every time. As a matter of fact, it's the only album period that does that.
Try Blind Guardian's 'A Night At The Opera' man.

"LOL!"
What? That album is so layered I know people who say they've listened to it over 2,000 times (collectively) and still pick out new details.

This wasn't very hard to pick out everything my first few go's through (I've heard enough wank encrusted stuff like this). However, sometimes these moments come together and absolutely floor me.

Thanks for the heads up. I promise, this will be spinning quite a bit over the next few days.

It's not so much in the song structure that these details lie, though. It's in the tiny little alterations made to a drum fill, or a guitar chord, or a vocal track, or background singing. This album is so subtle yet so blatant, somehow all at once. I'll stop now.... lol. But yes, give it more tries. Despite the way this community jerks off all over it, it truly is great.

there's extremely little "wank" in this album to be honest

Maybe less wank and more haphazard song writing.
