He's capable of pulling off amazing lyrics but sometimes he's just so laughable. Just looks at Your Unpleasant Family.

I find some of the lyrics on In Absentia and Deadwing just as cringeworthy at times. I wouldn't say he's ever been capable of pulling off amazing lyrics, adequate yes but certainly not amazing, but that's just me.

Never been big on his lyrics OR vocals tbh, they are both tolerable.

Yeah his vocals don't help matters either. His lyrics (and sometimes his vocals) are quite often intolerable for me.

Ok maybe not amazing but great. I don't find IA lyrics cringeworthy at all but some of Deadwing's, yes. Open Car pisses me off.

Lightbulb Sun and before had pretty consistently good lyrics imo it's after that he started writing shitty ones

And his vocals are great

He overall wrote shitty lyrics on The Incident. Though imo The Blind House is an incredibly well written song.

His vocals have always been really weak imo. They kinda suited the psychedelic stuff at times cos they went well with the sort of dreamy atmosphere but even then they weren't exactly aesthetically pleasing.

I don't mind his lyrics on their eraly stuff cos he's not trying too hard to make them conceptual or meaningful, it's just random psychedelic, LSD-inspired stuff.

Did he do drugs like that? Wouldn't be surprised but you don't necessarily need drugs to write trippy lyrics. I do agree that his vocals need to grow a pair sometimes. Singing is not his strength.

He sounds incredible when he multi-tracks his voice, whether it's just him or him and the backing vocalist.

Yes. When he's multi tracked he sounds so good. In songs like Drawing The Line, he sounds legitimately terrible.

@Mongi: Yeah I'm pretty sure he did, I could be wrong though. It's not exactly hard to write the sort of lyrics he wrote for their early albums, with or without drugs.

He needs multi tracking to make up for having such a weak and at times emotionless voice.

What can I say, I just like his voice. He sounds on good on, say, the t/t of Raven, or of Lightbulb Sun.

the version on Nil Recurring is a lot better, I think its called 'Normal' and its got some of Sentimental with a really sweet acoustic section added on
