Also to touch on the topic a few pages ago, there's many people that don't listen to certain music because of the production and many people who don't play certain games because of bad graphics. I for one would never play minecraft no matter how fun it may be because it looks like absolute dogshit

i mean sure but in chino's case he doesn't HAVE to do those awful harsh vox. deftones doesn't necessarily NEED harsh vocals. a lot of their best material already doesn't. if the next album had zero screaming would people even be mad about that?
it's not like mustaine or geddy lee or something where there's nothing else he can pivot to. his cleans are still perfectly fine.

I believe that the general dynamic in the band is that Steph is 100%, full-on METALZ, and needs the harsh stuff to continue making music as a group, else he'll just jack it in. I'm sure Chino would happily drop them in a heartbeat, but the push-pull between them is what usually leads to the band's best results.
They're functionally dysfunctional... quite unique in that aspect.

I actually love a lot of harshtones like Elite, Rats!, & Hexagram, but starting with Gore I feel Chino's harsh vox took a real noticeable decline. Sometimes he still can nail it when he uses it sparingly, but i think it might be for the best if he abandons trying to do it for the majority of a song.
