Should go without saying but influence and innovation don't relate to quality at all.

Quality is subjective, but influencial things more often than not have something at least a little special about them

Exactly. To say they aren't at all related is a little silly, but the most influential things may not quite be the best a time or genre has to offer.

It's kinda complicated because influential doesn't usually mean a lot more than "This happened to strike a chord with a whole bunch of people" but at the same time, surely there has to be a reason for it to be that way, especially when it's to the point that even today, 40 years later entire bands continue making entire careers ripping this off (and the band as a whole)

That doesn't mean you have to like something just because it's influential, though, let alone if it influenced something you don't like, but not the point.

What is true though is that in the 70's most of the cases of "influential" stuff were awesome too

"Exactly. To say they aren't at all related is a little silly"

It's not silly at all. As Gwyn said, quality in music is subjective; influence and innovation are not. Something with undeniable influence and/or innovation could be of very poor quality in someone's subjective opinion. Also, something can be influential in a bad way, depending on one's subjective opinion on that which it influenced.

Also I love how Pleb doesn't engage in musical discussion, he just comes in and says whether or not an album rules and then takes his leave :D

You mean deathschool who entered the thread to contradict me, to which I responded?

@Jac: It's pretty obvious why I thought it might be aimed at me as it was said in response to my comment.

Why would it be aimed specifically at you Sach, you weren't even on this page until now, smfh.
