Guitars and drums are the standout elements and if anything kind of expected a darker album.

"few more spins and it's losing some staying power. still a great record"

Well yeah... if you spin it a dozen times in a row then it should lose some of its staying power eventually lol

I feel like I should enjoy these guys more than I do. I usually love bands the consist of show-offs making complex shit most musicians lack the ability to play.

love how this sounds more stripped back and newtonian, rather than the endlessly entangled, quantum physics-y large hadron colander shit you usually get. i mean the drums sound like barrels of oil gettin detonated in a subway tunnel

close to a 5 innit

I don't know how everybody else feels about that, but could this be the most groove-centric Meshuggah album? I mean, I've been blasting it frequently in my car and I feel jerked around like a ragdoll. I wouldn't call it "danceable", but this record is a MOVER.

It's mega groove oriented, but no record will ever top Nothing on the groove front in my opinion.

(Ok, many jazz records would, but that's another point altogether.)

It is very groovy. It's consistent like Nothing. ObZen has their top three tracks all in one album so it's always going to be hard to top, but I agree this rivals it. I do like the production too; in line with sounds they've done in the past but still fresh.
