If you try to get Shoegaze insight from Fantano you might as well be shopping for lobster bisque at the dollar general. They got it but you don’t want it.

Who was actually expecting that Fantano would like it? He was lukewarm on their last two albums from what I remember, and he hasn't bothered with any Alcest records after doing a short, negative segment on Shelter back in the day, using the same rationale. He seems like a cool dude, and I usually respect where he's coming from, but he has such an insufferable outlook. I am surprised that he can derive any pleasure from music at all, given his style of reviewing.

And let’s not forget Hum, Deftones, and Slowdive. When M83 released Hurry Up We’re Dreaming, I remember him saying something along the lines of “this is dream pop dialed up to 11 and I don’t like that”. That was like a decade ago. So if I want a good take on Shoegaze or dream pop, that’s where I know not to look lmao. But yeah, he does not like the genre. He’s made that know. And he rates it anyway for some unforeseen reason. Anyway, HUWD is one of my favorites of last decade despite his shit take of 3 or 4 out of 10.

I love the ending of mombassa. people don't seem to like it on here as much as i had hoped one of my favorite parts of the album.

eh i wouldn't put hum, deftones, or (more recent) slowdive as being all that great at this stuff, they've all been outclassed. deftones were never in the upper echelon, bands like spotlights do what they do but do it much, much better than they ever did

That's true, he should have given it a 10/10 for being the best characterless shoegaze album of the year

that unseasoned broth is so true, so so true. absolutely accurate take.

an elephant in the room is that shoegaze lives or dies by guitar distortion effects and this album is a bit too clean, it has a totally ill-suited production for this kind of music

And yet “Solar Power”‘s unseasoned broth was best of the week. Lol. He should stick to pop and top 40

Good take. I stopped taking him seriously probably after the HUWD review but Foxing’s Dealer review is really where it got me. He’s been irrelevant to me for like 6 years or so.

He called the single the best of the week when great mass of color was the worst of the same week. I didn’t watch his solar power review in full tho

great mass of color is probably the worst song i've heard this year, thankfully the rest of the album isn't as tepid and insipid as that song but by god that's possibly the worst shoegaze song i've ever heard

You need more Shoegaze if that’s the worst you’ve ever heard lmao. Far from it. Song rules. And Solar Power is objectively worse but okie
