Caught it on today's livestream. Yeah it sounds a lot like something off of TIW. I'm wondering now if this and the world of mercy will be on a new album or if they're gonna drop a remastered & expanded version of TIW with both tracks placed somewhere within the tracklist.

World of Mercy was pretty cool, hope they push forward in that direction more.

I think they said that TWoM is the first single from their new album and this is the second. Also Kyo said in an interview with a Japanese magazine that I picked up after TIW that they scrapped a lot of material for that album because it was too Arche-ish and they wanted to do something different for TIW and that they may or may not release some of that stuff in the future so I’m wondering if any of those songs will appear on the upcoming album in some form. I can kinda hear how this new song (what we’ve heard at least) might incorporate some of that because it kinda sounds like a cross between TIW and Arche.

Doesn’t matter, please just get better production.

the production is definitely important for me, but as long as the songwriting is up to par ill be happy. The live performances almost always fix the production issues anyways. Problem with this album specifically was the songwriting felt a little half-baked compared to normal. Even kisou and macabre are great listens for me despite their subpar production and mixing

I love this album but yeah, my main complaint is that the songwriting and guitar riffs are too simple compared to their best albums. It still sounds good to me which is what matters most personally, thus the high rating (although if possible I’d give this more like a 4.3), but the riffs are a little too basic compared to Uroboros or DSS which are my two favorite albums. I felt like Arche was a bit too polished and this album is maybe a bit too raw. I do think that the simpler riffs are at least in part due to Kaoru’s hand injury though.

I didn't get super into this album, but I didn't think it was bad either. I suspect a lot of average to bad ratings come from basically every album before this being that much better than it. An average DEG album is still better than a lot of other crap out there.

For me this album falls short in the songwriting department too though. Production is obv awful but even with good production this album would still feel really underdeveloped.

I think all of the criticism about the production and songwriting not being up to par is totally valid and I actually kind of agree. I just really like the raw, dark aggression of this album that ultimately makes it great to me. As someone who loves skramz/screamo and like mid-00s metalcore this album gives off a lot of those vibes. My biggest criticism is that the riffs are too simple. The one thing I don’t understand is people on here saying this band is doomed/a lost cause/past its prime because they made one album they dislike after multiple albums that they consider masterpieces. I just don’t get the logic there, all of their albums sound quite different from the last so I wouldn’t really worry unless you hate their next album too.

I think its cause with the 3 albums before this, each felt like it was breaking new ground for the band. This feels like they are reverting to older cliches instead of improving upon what they'd done on arche

Honestly, "the world Of Mercy" is a really good candidate for the soundtrack for 2020. I will do A run of DEG eventually, the only thing that worries me is how freaking massive their disog. is (and how much they redo their material),like would this be as big as a elvis disog. run? I remember trying to get into the band with Gauze a few years a go but that record did not click with me, however i was able to with this album (though this album might of been one of the hardest drops when i was re-evaluating my 5s on relook), i then checked out Uroboros which i love, and i also like some other songs on other records here and there (Like "Ukuro") but have not really given any other albums a full spin recently

Imo their best albums are Uroboros and DSS. Arche is great too but I think it has the same “problem” as this album which is somewhat dumbed down songwriting compared to the two albums I mentioned.

Plenty of bands have had rough spots in their discography. Many fans might argue Marrow was one of those points for DEG. I heard all the complaints around that time. Fans were worried DEG had sold out, due to adopting a more "western" metal sound, trying to break into America. I honestly loved that album, and Withering to Death, so I didn't quite understand it, but I also didn't grow up with DEG from the start. That was my intro to the band, then I worked my way backwards into their discography. That said, it seems the worry about this album stems from it being so late in their discography? So it may signal a decline in ideas, and direction for the band moving forward. That's what I'm gathering from some of the comments, anyway. I prefer to give the band a little more credit, and I think they still have another banger of an album left in them before the fire fizzles out.

We all worry in some way, shape or form for DEG because they’ve been a band for over 20 years, and given the demanding style in which Kyo sings one doesn’t know for how much longer they will keep going. It’s true all bands do go through a rough area in their careers, but given DEG’s longevity and how much a decline in quality this album felt as opposed to their three previous albums, You can’t quite fault those of us who feel slightly trepidatious moving forward.
