I have been listening to this band for close to 20 years now which is really hard to believe. I have liked most if not everything they have done. A couple tracks here and there i'm not crazy about but I honestly like almost all their songs. I have learned with glassjaw too not to judge the album (or ep) too quickly. They have a complex sound and it can take a few listens to get the vibe of it.
Unfortunately after a few months with this records I have to say I don't think its very good. The initial single was a little awkward. Really good chorus but with almost stereotypical glassjaw moments. Was surprised to hear them return this after ther milder more mature sounding coloring book. Thats not really the issue. The issue is that the songs simply aren't well written. They don't flow, and daryls performance, which is a big part of their sound, is just not good. The guitar work is decent, the drums and bass basically sound like stock glassjaw member whereas in previous records the drummer and bassist put their own spins on the signature sound. While they are executed well they sound stock with low affect.
I think Daryl and Justin are not enough to carry this group and they need the help of some of the older members. The songs are confused and awkward, unlike that sound in previous efforts it doesn't work here. The other thing is the songs never really go anywhere. They have strange trajectories. Like all well established groups they are getting the benefit of the doubt and getting higher marks than I feel this album deserves. Several of my other friends have listened to them as long as I have and it seems that the consensus with them isn't favorable either for whatever that is worth.

They are totally enough to carry the band and this album is proof of it
This record has by far the most destructive and pummeling bass performance of any record and while the drums are more restrained, that’s because they don’t need to be over complex everything works perfectly as a unit to this record and the lack of flashiness helps make the songs feel more cohesive, which this record feels more cohesive than their two other albums

Gotta agree that in hindsight this album is kind of weak, but it's still ten times better than worship and tribute
