Like, yeah this is sad as hell, and beautifully written. Idk why that qualifies it as music tho. If this is music then so are most audiobooks that have minimal music in the background. It just fails to engage me on nearly every level other than feeling great empathy for him. It's a sad and depressing experience, I just don't know how someone could sit down and actively listen to it repeatedly.

Fair enough. You really don't see these as songs, though? I find chord progressions and discernible melodies, and I don't see this as much different to a lot of other pieces in his discography. Its effect for certain is, and it takes a looser, barer, slightly more spoken-word approach, however at its base this is undoubtedly what I'd consider music. I don't see the audiobook example at all; an audiobook is a piece of written narrative performed, and whatever soundtrack exists is secondary, or there to play off and emphasise the "book". This album wouldn't be what it is without the accompanying instruments.

not comparable at all.

Wish that epiphany happened to me too...

i mean there's definitely music there, but it's so samey and pushed to the background most of the time. can only handle so much dreariness and boring guitar plucking. like i said, i love the lyrics and overall messages conveyed here (especially those about REAL death, not glamorized, and dressed up as it normally is in movies, music, etc), but, honestly, it's super fucking boring to listen to more than once or twice. monotony is kind of the point too and i get that. it details death better than a lot of albums do, it just isn't very engaging beyond the thoughts it evokes upon first listen. i think it's an important album and unlike any i've ever heard before, just not one i particularly enjoy, or would classify as musical. far more engaging and meaningful insofar as the thoughts and discussions it inspires rather than enjoyed as music.

it just sounds like he picked his guitar up and started playing random shit, did one take and said 'yeah, sure, that works for the song' and it does work contextually, but it's boring. look at the shit he wrote for the glow, or several of his albums under mount eerie. very engaging while also deeply human and emotional. this is too bare for my liking. again, appreciate the album for what it is and i see the appeal. calling it an audiobook is honestly just a gross exaggeration lol :P sry

I agree with your analysis tbh, though I'd argue this is still 'music', albeit music that stretches the definition to its limits. That's really just an argument over terminology though, as I agree with the substance of what you just said (except that I do enjoy the guitar work on this and argue it has a bit more depth to it, though of course doesn't come close to how interesting his more instrumental work is)

That's fair, it's just not for me. My feelings for this album are so conflicted. It's never been harder to rate an album tbh

I used to see it exactly how you did Gyro. I respect both views, but I just can't get over how genuine this is. He's writing songs a few days, months, after he watched his wife die in their house. It's so much more powerful because of the way he recounts mundane details, like how hard it was to throw away her toothbrush. If you make it about the lyrics, and really just sit down with the record one-on-one with no distractions, it is life changing.
