in the grander scheme of their discography, Lacquer is not a typical song. Personally, the other two songs don't strike a chord in me either. However, I like Katatonia, I can stand a song I don't like

Probably most people weren't expecting them to release this type of track as the first taste of the new record

Anyway, it's a good track

It's a good track, but maybe an odd single, unless the whole album is like that. I'm excited to hear the whole thing either way. Even if they went soft the whole record, if you've ever heard Sanctitude it's absolutely incredible, and I'm sure it would be something worth spending some time with.

this record sounds the same but with the songwriting switched to boring and the riffs switched to non-existent

the new song's pretty good, some curious new sounds

Idk the first time I heard Takeover from 1:00 onwards it instantly became my favorite guitarwork of theirs since at the very least BMD. The alternation of the spiraling riff with the sharp doomy one in the verses is so great, and then around 2:15 the "imperious" one arrives backed by the keys. I love it so much ugh. Possibly my single favorite Katatonia song considering drumming and vocal lines too, and in general the dynamic writing throughout the song.
