"This is the tightest the band has ever sounded."

Probably you're right. This is definitely one of my favourite albums of them.

Second favorite for me after Images, but yeah, amazing stuff. Really love the darker atmosphere on this one

It's true, especially due to the amazing playing of Kevin Moore.

It's kinda funny people say this. While I agree that the synths here really make the album, Kevin Moore wasn't as involved in the songwriting process here. Images was way more synth driven, this has its focus much much more on the guitar. But the touches Moore adds here really have their impact

True, but Kevin Moore puts a lot of value in the notes he doesn't play. And that's what separates the Moore era and the band's later work with Rudess

Yes, Moore was more simplistic and it really made these albums more down to earth and enjoyable. I like a good Rudess noodle, but sometimes it just feels hollow

I feel like Rudess joining was the point that DT codified their sound. They're tried some little things but haven't really changed much sound-wise since Scenes from a Memory.

Scenes' piano parts were written before Rudess. I think their sound started being samey with ''6 Degrees''.... Even ''Train of Thought'' was more thrashy, and they never sounded that way again

^ One of the best songs ever. The solo version he recorded later on is beautiful as well

Just look up "Kevin Moore Space Dye Vest" on Youtube and you'll find it. It's even more somber and dark than this version of the song

Yea, great performance, but compared to this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc-EhKCWKpk two years earlier you can clearly hear how strained James’ voice is due to the food poisoning event. Read somewhere that he went on tour against doctor’s advice which damaged his vocal chords in a lasting manner.

The food poisoning was probably very damaging, but honestly his way of singing was gonna wear him down no matter what.

The breathy softer parts alone would hurt him in the long run
