That’s a crazy take, album highlight for me to particularly with the pre chorus “happiness is just a moment “

the lyrics are just so lame in that chorus, combined with the joyous melody it's just kinda lol. album is still a 5 though

even if the lyrics aren't perfect, the melody and delivery sell it. probably my fav song on the album

"On the Impossible Past" Tier List
---
S: Good Things; The Obituaries; Casey
A+: Gates; I Can't Seem to Tell; Burn After Reading
A: Freedom Bridge; Mexican Guitars; Nice Things
B+: Ava House; Sun Hotel; On the Impossible Past
B: Sculptors and Vandals
---
Sculptors and Vandals is the album's weakest point for me, but even that is only as low as a "B". This album is just too good. I also agree that the lyrics for the Gates chorus aren't exactly profound, but the melody and the way they're sung make it such an infectious section.

Ava House, Sun Hotel, and Freedom Bridge are the only ones I'm iffy on. I still love Sculptors and Vandals. Nice Things has been my favorite song off this for a few months now

I'm always surprised people have Ava House low. It's such a big song. I Can't Seem to Tell is the weak point here for me

I love Sun Hotel. Definitely one of my favorites here, even though part 2 is even better

I can get behind that. This is one of the few records nowadays that just doesn't grow off me. I can always come back to this and enjoy it

ava house is weak, catchy in an inane way ig

I’d argue I Can’t Seem to Tell is way bigger, especially in the hook.

"sculptors and vandals is their best tom song"

that would be Burn After Writing, but Greg's backing vox are the best part so it feels weird to call that a Tom song. Freedom Bridge is awesome too

They need to get back to harmonizing on each others songs again.

cannot understand one single bit how Ava house is weak. that pounding intro and Tom's yelling are iconic to me

you can probably play it too! just take one drum stick and hit one drum with it til the end of time.

the pounding is the main reason the song just doesn't fly with me. the singing is mids as well. i agree the yells hit the spot (as per usual with this band) but it doesn't save the song

"you can probably play it too! just take one drum stick and hit one drum with it til the end of time."

yeah but I mean there are sooo many timeless songs that are great in part because of their simplicity. that alone isn't a detractor

I feel you, but Ava House doesn’t strike me as timeless
