it's not his opinion per se, i mean he has the correct opinion if u can say that. his description of Represent also is pretty spot on. idk it's like how he approaches the whole thing. like he starts talking about the instrumentals and compositions and shit like it's some prog album or something. and he doesnt even say much about them other than "that [insert vague description of beat] really adds character to the song"
he barely touches on his revolutionary flow or the themes of the album apart from a couple of individual lines here and there. this is without getting into his weird inaccuracies from when he was going into the history of hip hop. it's hard to explain but what im tryna say is that he approaches hip hop like some kinda musical tourist. doesnt go much deeper than "theres some sick lines here, and a nice bassline there (the bassline he was talking about on NY State of Mind is actually just a piano riff btw)" etc. nothing wrong with that that at all tho

fantano is fine tbh. people on sput love to hate on him because they can't handle divergent opinions

Yeah if Fantano's review of Illmatic was an amateur review on Sput it would recieve some hefty negs. Also I found it hard to believe how familiar he was with the album and yet be so clueless about the samples used on NY State of Mind

If any Vlog album review was posted on sput word for word it would receive hefty negs lol. The same way say if somebody made a Vlog album review that was just one of say Arcade's reviews word for word, it would be boring as shit. It's two completely different styles.

He offers a good balance of entertainment and critical analysis of the music but I think there's inevitably some jealousy in the fact that he makes a living by offering his opinion on music.

I mean he occasionally misses stuff, especially samples in hip hop, like when he totally missed that Death Grip's "I Want It I Need It" is completely built off of the riff of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" in his Exmilitary review. But we have to remember that this man makes his living off his reviews and probably spends a huge amount of his time working on multiple reviews at once, so they aren't always going to be perfect content wise (although Illmatic is over 20 years old so he probably shouldn't have messed up that NY State of Mind bit). He still articulates his opinions better then like 80% of this site in his reviews though.
Plus what Balls said yeah.

ye he clearly doesnt spend weeks absorbing an album before reviewing but A) thats fine B) plenty of people on this site are just as guilty
his classic reviews where hes obviously had plenty of time revisit an album are usually pretty great and on point, i havent watched the illmatic one yet but his kid a and unknown pleasures reviews i remember were good

The definitive rap album. Perfect.

It's so weird how this is considered a GOAT rap album when Nas himself says he never listens to it.
I get the appeal, the production is flawless and his flow (which he kinda ripped off from 2pac) is on point, but lyrically this is probably nas worst album by far.

Production is easily my favorite part of this album. I've never heard an album that just teleports you to somewhere else in the world the way Illmatic puts me in New York.
