I mean I appreciate Elliott's ability to put out a consistent and critically acclaimed discography. I was excited to see how many high averages his albums have gotten. But after his first two albums, I was hardly impressed bar a few songs. That doesn't mean he's a bad artist or that these are bad albums. Maybe i'll enjoy his other material. Maybe it will grow on me. But I think i'd rather listen to other artists take on depressing topics, like for instance Listening Winds, or Hurt, or Nude, or a variety of other songs. When an album creator creates an album talking similarly themed topics, they have to work hard to make sure the album doesn't suffer from reputation. And despite some really memorable songs and melodies, I don't get blown away by it from start to finish. I get bored by it, quite frankly.

That's just me though.

When did I criticize him and not the album? Look at my other comments. If I did then it was by mistake.

to be fair to ALA Smith's work does get markedly 'better' (according to the general critical consensus/humble record buying public, don't kill me for sayin' it) from Either/Or on, and something like XO is totally different in it's approach to this.

He might, just might, prefer the later stuff. Then maybe work back and try and like this proto/demo shit later...just like the Doof is trying to ;P

Agreed, classic. Also rate 'Twilight', 'Memory Lane' and 'A Fond Farewell' not far behind.

Still have 'Basement' rated higher than the first two albums so I guess I'm not a typical Smith fan.

Yeah, you're the WRONG kind. Basement is underrated though. I dig it more than XO.
