gotta back up my statement. had to downgrade to a 3.5. The highs on here are incredible but there are just so many songs on here I don't care for and some who are outright annoying like The Number Song

So if we refine the parameters to quintessential trip hop albums that pioneered phase 2 (the dark, gritty, band oriented chapter) what would yall nominate as a potential classic aside from dummy and mezz?

Well it's not that known but DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo - Ki-Oku is one of the best trip hop albums of all time in my opinion

Got to be honest I don't think I've listened to all that much trip hop released after Mezzanine

I'm a huge DJ Krush fan. His work obviously has more hip hop leanings but it's super dark, very jazzy and always amazing. I'd probably pick one of his 90s albums, like Kakusei.
But I'm always looking for more 90s trip hop with a dark edge so please hit me up!

Yeah, it's great agreed, although I do prefer his solo output. But all of it rules, guy's a genius.
I saw him live last year, still can't believe how amazing he was too.

I don't care for his new stuff. it's pretty shit to be honest
btw Duality by him and Shadow is the greatest trip hop song of all time change my mind

It's amazing agreed.
Totally in love with his new output too haha, I'm a real fanboy I guess. Especially the Kiseki album was amazing.
But it's different yeah, more hip hop, less jazz, I can see that ruffling a few feathers.

ugh japanese is like the worst language when it comes to hip hop in my opinion that's why I especially hated that record. Can't listen to more than 10 seconds of japanese rap before I go insane

Haha I totally get that you'd hate it if that's the case. Some of those dudes are unbelievably good to me, especially the one on the final track, YUI. Woof.

Honestly, dj krush is a great nomination for this. I feel like hes overlooked in the conversation. I am not hesitant to say that I find him more impactful to trip hop than dj shadow by a longshot

Me too, I prefer his vibes over Shadow's, as reflected by my ratings.
Do you have any other darker recs Pots?
Bowery Electric is awesome too, their album Beat in particular.

DJ Cam - Abstract Manifesto. Check it out if you dig Krush. Underground Vibes and Mad Blunted Jazz by him are great too
