Basement is awesome and awesomely dark, but there's something off about Shooting Stars although it's still a good tune
King's Crossing, Memory Lane, Twilight and Fond Farewell are the ones that stand out on that one for me.

Yeah those four are the key four - I do think with Elliott, there's a notable 'best' of each album. Not even necessarily my favourite but the ones which get the most appreciation; Between The Bars / Angeles on E/O, Waltz #2 / Needle In The Hay etc etc.
Maybe only this one is actually missing that.

Good spot yeah, maybe 'Happiness' and one other? There doesn't seem to be a consensus though you're right.
On 'XO' I see the RYM track ratings have 'Waltz #2' as a runaway winner. I'd maybe go for 'Pitseleh' and 'Sweet Adeline', although I also prefer the other 'Waltz #1' to 2 and that would be in the running

@phero both are still great songs - fundamentally he's an incredible songwriter - but the fact that he specifically mixed them in such an original way for impact and the final release just ignored that is infuriating beyond belief
New Moon is ofc incredible but there was no posthumous meddling to be done on those, they're all s/t to Either/Or outtakes

Best song on the album is probably Stupidity Tries, the chord progression is just so warm and beautiful. Elliott Smith was the best

“Stupidity Tries” is top 3-4 but “Everything Reminds Me of Her” or “Better Be Quiet Now” takes the cake for me on this album. This def has a side B drop off for me though, honestly you could cut any of all of those songs and I wouldn’t mind too much - not that they’re bad, they’re all still good, this just feels overlong to me and having that long stretch of weaker songs doesn’t help.

Don’t get the hype for that one, it’s fine I guess but nothing remarkable about it. Might actually be my least favorite.

This is going to be a hot take, but I actually don’t rate Smith too much as a lyricist. He’s certainly good but I honestly think his lyrics kind of nonsense a decent amount of the time. He also has this kind of awkward thing where the lines often don’t fit very well into the melodies, especially on his more rocking songs. Imo his craft lies more in arrangements and the “shape”/feel of his songs. I rarely care to look into the lyrics.

Yeah that is quite an awful take, ES might be my favourite lyricist

Ok I may be overstating some of my issues - the main point is he was sold to me as an amazing lyricist and I rate him only “very good” to “often great” but imo rarely amazing. Don’t think he’d break a top 50, but I admit as I said that I haven’t felt too compelled to spend much time with the lyrics - they just haven’t really invited it.

The romance of Elliott’s words, melodies and instrumental tones are the big draw for me - they mesh so well :/

‘The litebrite's now black and white
Cause you took apart a picture that wasn't right
Pitch burning on a shining sheet
The only maker that you'd want to meet
The dying man in a living room
Who's shadow paces the floor’
He’s one of the greatest

"veins full of disappearing ink, vomiting in your kitchen sink" is the one that always makes me stop and go 'holy fuck'
he's incredible, and his dark humour is underrated by a lot of critics too. like the sea of trash line in Stupidity Tries, stuff like that is gold
