It's just Whoracle and Colony, kek.
We agree that In Flames doesn't exist from 2008 - 2020, yeah? We just ignore that 12 year period. ex dee

Jester Script Transfigured is an underratedd gem and probably my favourite of theirs. December Flower, Coerced Coexistence, Resin, Goliaths Disarm Their Davids, Man Made God and The Hive are also among my favs.

I recently learned that they toured with Slipknot just before they started recording this album btw lol, pretty funny and explains a lot really

First two Slipknot albums are absolutely savage, though, and sound nothing like this.
hot take: The "mediocre" In Flames albums actually aren't that far off from their "well liked" albums if you look at the composition. Comparing RRTR and Whoracle, for instance, there's a TON more similar than different. Food for the Gods would have fit on RRTR or STYE just fine. I have the entire 2008-2020 catalogue basically rated as "trash tier" but they were still heavier than, say, Metallica, that entire time. The albums were just super boring and at times painful to listen to (Anders seems to sometimes be a good singer and other times be a horrifically bad singer, to the point it completely ruins songs that might otherwise have been tolerable, at least).
The "nu-metal" song structure has always been a part of In Flames. They were never particularly fast, and never particularly tech or shreddy. The biggest differences across the discog are mostly Anders performing well or poorly, insanely bad lyrics being too upfront some times, and different kinds of production that are hit or miss, sometimes hit or miss on specific songs on specific albums, even. One might argue "atmosphere" - but RRTR and STYE and CC all feature a unique atmosphere per album, across the whole album.
I think their 2023 album is easily one of the best they've ever done. Taking the old albums at face value the 2023 album has tighter songwriting, the execution on the ideas is generally better, and the production is obviously superior compared to albums like Whoracle or Colony. Sure, it's what we'd call "pop metal" now maybe, but KSE was doing that back in 2006, too, and everyone loves End of Heartache.
Anyway, nobody asked for this shitty hot take from an idiot. If you read or didn't read this, and agree or disagree, cheers fren.

Out of their large discography, I would say half their albums are 4 or 4.5s at best.

Would have to agree. I really don't think there's a MASSIVE departure from something like RRTR and Whoracle. There are just a few albums that have uninspired riffs, poor vocal performances. What do you want, these guys have been doing it for 30 years, not every album is gonna be a banger.

Anders' best vocal performance will always be The Jester Race because it has none of his awful cleans or weird frog vocals.

good to see some diversity of opinion, I'd say his best vocal perfomance is definitely Colony overall. but yeah, anything containing anders' cleans can't be in contention by default
