Really? I find S/T to be more consistently heavy, there barely are any quiet moments, whereas on TB there are quite a few

I guess it's the Leviathan to Blood Mountain to Crack The Skye phenomenon. The transitional album never seems to satisfy my needs as much as the ones, who delved more into the respective musical style (Leviathan for the riffs and Crack The Skye for the epic prog journey)

"I find S/T to be more consistently heavy, there barely are any quiet moments, whereas on TB there are quite a few"
Hit the nail on the head there - the s/t is pretty uncontoured, whereas TB gives its heavy parts more space to land (and fwiw I'd say they're more crushing regardless)

The thing is that i listen to COL a lot while working out and the quiet sections on TB were very jarring and kind of annoying when you needed something to really go all out. So part of my discomfort with TB may result from this. I will stick to S/T for working out i guess

haha "my lifestyle is too healthy for me to get into the Beyond" ;] fair reasoning ig

Probably true, but even in a freetime listening sesh it didn't vibe with me, similar to the Mastodon thing
SATH next, having really high expectations for this one, given that my first COL song was Finland and me loving this

The above gymnasium reasoning for disliking the album hurts my brain

Hahaha i know. But trust me, it's mainly because of it being rather transitional in sound like Blood Mountain was to Mastodon

When I’m lifting like 500 pounds I think ‘turd vocals’ and like hit the step-o-matic hard.

I have to say one thing, at least preferring s/t to The Beyond is an original opinion. Damn.
Yeah I don’t get the finding it heavier thing, cliched and overused term perhaps, but TB really is the most ‘crushing‘ CoL release.

Listening to Salvation now and it still feels like a journey

s/t’s more repetitive and not as well-written as the beyond
and that could throw me off on sets. the quiet parts on beyond are still pretty heavy and it’s the better workout album. can’t change my mind on that after 15 years.

yeah, tbh the Beyond has the same feeling as Celestial, where a lot of the quiet parts pack a different kind of heaviness
