I think they pulled it off better in their earlier years then they did later on. The compositions are less glossy, more organic.

I always liked the gloss of their mid-period stuff, especially on Ghost Reveries. Now there's an atmospheric record for ya!

Agreed it’s absolute quality but there’s still the abundance of gloss. I don’t think they recaptured the sense of depth reached on the first three records until Heritage which is luxuriant. Possibly because they opened themselves upto a different style which they went into full on. Some would claim it lacks substance but I won’t hear a bad word said.
