haven't really thought much about the meaning of those lyrics but i'd imagine the bars represent prison bars which either
elliott or the girl are trapped behind (probably a metaphor for alcoholism) and the bars are preventing the two from
properly being together/holding one and the best they can do is kiss 'between the bars'
idk I'm probably way off i'll go read the lyrics and think about it some more

Yeah I think it works better if there is a girl in the song as a metaphor for alcoholism. Makes more sense with the "kiss me again/ between the bars" and "keep you apart/deep in my heart" lines.
damn so deep, hope I can never relate to this song.

damn this will always be my favourite, i think it's got the best dynamic of rock and folk and i love the warm production a lot.
this was also the first album i listened to after i broke up with my gf, so it's got some sentimental value to it. can't believe I didn't 5 it until just a few months ago, can't imagine it as any less now.

tommy yeah I definitely feel you. I'm not a huge fan of the full band sound of XO and presumably the s/t even though I love Waltz #2 but XO was the first ES I heard back when this prob would have bored me so I think that's why I love it so much
@demi idk if you listen it'll probably grow. I mean the lyricism is enough for a 4 lol
