And yeah trying to explain what kind of dubstep you listen to to people who only know of skrillex and the like is one of the most infuriating things ever. Especially when they assume you don't know what you're talking about because you're calling this kind of thing dubstep and it doesn't resemble their idea of it. But they don't listen and just try to educate you on what dubstep actually is.
Like my fam knows I'm really into music, I hook my dad up with folk and rock stuff all the time that he digs. But I know they think I like shitty stuff because I listen to dubstep. My sister (upon hearing that) said "all dubstep sucks". And I just didn't really know what to say. The thing is, I agree with her point which is that all the dubstep she hears sucks, and I'm sure it does because I know what dubstep most people know. But I just don't even know how to begin, "um actually most stuff that you hear nowadays is way different from the origins of the genre, the stuff I like is deeper and blah blah" you always just sound like a douche when you start rambling about that kind of thing IRL. Or maybe you do when you do it online too in which case I better end this post.

nah I know what you mean. The thing is I usually agree with these people in a way but the way they ignorantly dismiss the genre is infuriating. Usually I don't go down the 'you're probably thinking of skrillstep (lol) though' and I just pretend to assume they know what they're talking about. But of course they then just think I'm a moron for liking an awful genre and trying to defend it by using unrelated artists like phaeleh and burial. Cos that's what this guy was telling me, that burial isn't dubstep, just filler ambient, and it just sounds like "any 90s electronic music". He hasn't responded to my reply to that yet.
But it's more infuriating when half of people dismiss you for liking 'dubstep' and the other half then dismiss you for not liking downlink
