At last we can move on.

I can't believe we went from "WP is their best album" to "SNW is their best album" to "Koi is their best album" in the course of a decade.

yeah, it's kind of wild. SNW was a real moment but not their best, and Koi was ok but nowhere near their best either. Deftones fans are schizophrenic confirmed

The schizophrenia is entirely age based I think, or at least has to do when someone got into the band. Older fans are gonna say its WP or ATF and the younger fans who discovered them around the 2010's or later will go to bat for DE and KNY. Then you have the fans who say its SNW or S/T. Really a mark of their quality and longevity though.

yeah the fans can't ever get along or agree on what the best release is, but it's honestly kind of comforting

agreed koi is the best good talk guys

Has it always been like that? I remember I was still excited when DE got released in 2010 only for KNY to drop two years later out of the blue.

SNW purists always seemed like vapid contrarians to me — album is way too messy to be their definitive statement as a band.

They don't have a bad album. Personally, White Pony and Diamond Eyes are their best in my opinion.

Not sure about Gore not being bad, at best it's average

Nah Gore is good too, just listened to it for the first time in probably years. The same songs I hated before I still don’t really care for now, Pittura Infamante is annoying, Xenon is just kinda bland.
But it’s got some really lush soundscapes, specifically the intros to Hearts/Wires and LMIRL. Phantom Bride is still one of their most gorgeous songs instrumentally, I was really underwhelmed by Jerry’s solo on release but I’ve grown to really love it, and that outro is fucking crushing with its wailing guitars and Steph doing his thing.
Acid Hologram has that really repetitive wall of sound guitarwork, really is just a metally shoegaze song but it works really well with Chino’s vocal melodies. And the opener and closer aren’t anything particularly new for the band, but they’re really damn good.
I guess I don’t really *love* Doomed User. It’s still a fun track but it really feels like they went “hey, we really gotta put a heavy track in here or Stephen is gonna lose his fucking mind”. The title track is much better and more dynamic as the album’s “heavy song”
I’m rambling but yeah it’s got mostly great songs, a couple of duds, which is honestly just like most other Deftones albums. I didn’t touch on Geometric Headdress which I find to be one of their most underrated songs. It’s got some good ass riffs and this urgency, for lack of a better word, that you won’t find in most of their other material. Amazing track imo and one of their best.

I love Gore, it feels like home. Steph is MIA and Chino is in charge, and I get to bounce on the bed. Jerry's solo on Bride is fucking exquisite. Hearts and LMIRL are two of their best songs full stop. Pittura and Xenon do kind of suck but I can overlook it because the album scratches a very particular itch. Also Rubicon is fucking unreal as a closer, just pure chills

I do like Geometric Headress a lot too, though it's a pretty weird song and took some time to grow on me

Underrated as fuck. That 3.4 avg is whack. I don’t even really mind the “bad” production anymore. Might be a little bit of a hot take but Geometric Headdress going into Hearts/Wires is just as good as going from Rosemary to Goon Squad. I’m a sucker for tracks that seamlessly transition like that.
I don’t think LMIRL is quite as strong as Hearts/Wires but I fucking love that intro so much. Their moodier instrumentals are always fantastic. I think we’ve for sure talked about it before art but I fucking love Konami code and any time they make anything that’s close to that vibe. I get the same kind of feeling on the outros to Math and Pompeji here.
I honestly wish Frank and Chino would just fuck around and make more ambient songs. Even if it’s just intros or outros or whatever. Just more of that shit plz

I wish they would fuck around and just make more songs period! These gaps between albums always kill me. Yeah, Konami Code is low-key the best/most unique Deftones song. Such a perfect mood and I'd say Math is the closest they came to reliving that

This grew off me a lot other than a couple tracks. I'm kind of over Deftones as well... God that feels so sad to say. Just give me Eros at this point, that's all I want
