Shit man, that must have sucked!

But I just don't see your points despite the personal one. SMBH is groovy as hell, doen't lack personality in any way (like the recent Muse songs do) and is a colourful, catchy song.

Same for Knights. It's overblown for sure, but really fun

i don't think black hole has a good groove at all, it's one of those that just pisses me off with its laziness - the whole song just feels like a lazy attempt at a mainstream hit to me (i guess it worked though)

i see why people like knights but it's the same problem for me as I have with bands like Queen, I don't think the overblowness is justified at all - it stops sounding fun to me and starts being grating and hard to listen to

ultimately I liked it best how they were here and on origin - they expanded their sound and had some really interesting ideas but they played within their abilities and knew when and where to add a bit of flair rather than attempting to coat the whole song with this thick cheesy theatricality

knights of cydonia is like the 2nd best song on that album

still, be hard pressed to argue that the album as a whole is as good as this or origin

I have to agree though they really lost all subtlety after Absolution. This and OoS are their best work

This album does have subtlety e.g. in Endlessly

That's something they lost on the releases after this

Sinternet: your criticism of Supermassive & praise for Starlight never fails to confuse me, how is Starlight not generic? It’s one of the most derivative songs they ever did & signalled the end of their relevance & full transformation into mainstream ‘crowd-peasers’. Yet Supermassive could’ve been written by anyone & is ‘painfully unintelligent’

I don’t get it.

My criticism of SBH is not only that it is generic, because yes I agree both are (in fact Starlight sounds like something an edgier Mew might write). My criticism of it in that regard is that it tries to be something bigger than it actually is. It wants to sound like a sleazy lad rock classic but completely falls flat. Starlight, on the other hand, is very understated both of itself and in the context of the album and as such it never crosses that line between good catchy fun and mind-numbingly dull - the band play within their means.

There's nothing wrong with being generic, many of my favourite songs ever didn't push boundaries or experiment all that much, but if you want to make a generic song you have to at least accept the fact that it's nothing revolutionary, and SBH tries way too hard to be anything other than generic but fails. Muse trying to be heavy (or at least raw) has always sucked.

Besides them trying to make music with balls is especially hilarious considering they're from Devon of all places.

This band's first three albums are stone cold fucking classics, half of albums 4 and 5 are just okay, and the rest is shit.

Supermassive Black Hole is a certified™ jam sin, come on.

If you listen to Hysteria, Plug in Baby, and Bliss you basically don't need to hear any other songs by this band.

But yeah, I think Origin of Symmetry is probably their best record.

It all becomes samey after a while. Anyway I might go back and listen to the albums on Spotify later. I might be remembering wrong. I remember loving them in college and surprisingly they go very well with reading and studying.

I listened to Showbiz again recently and gained a new respect for it, it's really quite nice.

Showbiz definetly has some filler, but it has it's own charm. It's underrated for sure and very lovely
