"I'm in the midst of trying to figure out what role lyrics play in what we call 'music' "

whoa really cool thing to think about it. i think in their most basic they establish humanity and and human individuality in a song, they help form more blatant medium of communication vs music without them, and finally can be used to justify the purpose of certain songs/passages by elevating the information a piece of music conveys. and in a more trivial way, provide entertainment in the same way a book or poem does.

other than Tame Impala this is my first psych pop album so yeah.

pre-Deftones music eh? not sure what that's supposed to mean but I have no intention of getting into or even listening to Deftones (again).

and to Space's point, lyrics can play a huge role in music but just like any instrument they are not essential (obv.) I'd like to think for most albums that contain lyrics, they are meant to serve as an outlet for expression. the best kind of music is able to express feelings without blatantly stating them, however, but the lyrics themselves can either accentuate this or fill in the blanks when necessary. obviously this depends on the genre though (rap lyrics versus indie lyrics).

He's calling you young and inexperienced, such that the bulk of your music listening is post-deftones music
