which is what is so frustrating to me because the run from 83-91 was beyond incredible, riffs were perfect, speed was there, lyrics were there, solos were there, drums sucked but w/e. they put so much into their craft and then just turned to shit. its like in space jam when the monstars took the nba players talent, that's what happened to these guys after 91

^ to be fair, the drums were actually pretty good on those early Metallica records

Yeah Lars was solid in 80s and early 90s especially on puppets and justice. Typical Lars hate no surprises

Lars was easily the least solid drummer out of pretty much all the big 80s metal bands. I cant even think of anyone that he's relatively close to in terms of ability from the big metal bands of that era. And it's known that there was a lot of studio trickery to make things sound the way they did, especially for ajfa. I like those early metallica records but it's just the truth

If we get into some of the 2nd tier bands (in terms of popularity) like kreator or sodom though then yeah

Half assed agree. Lars isn't Dave Lombardo by any means but he was solid enough and I always dug his drumming. He laid down the drum tracks for all the legendary metallica tracks in the 80s and early 90s.. that will always get a nod from me. I don't really care about his lacking in technical ability or any of that. He had his own little unique style and he got the job done for metallica again that gets a nod and respect from me

lars sucks and you know it stop fronting

Honestly I know people who would say with a straight face that st anger is their favorite Metallica album and I'll be honest I can't even argue with that. Got so much flak but I really feel like it was the most important album they've made in the last 20 or so years. It was them really going in there and getting all the emotions they'd pent up out of their system. Catharsis is a huge plus for me.

Lars is quite adequate on their first 5 I'd say. But those are the good albums anyway, the rest is sadly pretty hit or miss, with there being a lot more misses overall. But I agree 100% with sneakers' take that these guys phoned it in more than 30 years ago, studio album wise anyway. Still think they fucking bring it live every night. But yeah, maybe they should let Kirk and Rob write the next album so we get a latin jazz wah wah classic.
Maybe I should listen to this one first hm

I've actually come around to Lars' playing on the album. If anything, Kirk is the one that I think contributes the least here; it's just a bunch of boring, lazy blues solos... which, to be fair, is what he's been doing for a while now. But it's especially egregious on this album

Not to be rude, and I didn't even listen to the album so this is kind of just a random question but, how the hell is this a 3.5 if the solos don't hit

Because James and Rob pretty much carry the whole thing for me, and are more than enough to make up for Kirk's shortcomings in this case. For what the solos lack, this thing has some of my favorite modern Metallica riffs and vox

honestly, James' lyrics are probably the most interesting thing here for me
solos are standard, i feel like i could pinpoint any riff here to a slight rewrite of their 80s/90s fare (which i guess is enough for the nostalgia trip, but i feel like there's more interesting things that could be done ESPECIALLY for a SEVEN YEAR WAIT...), the length is prohibitive (77 minutes for maybe 30 minutes of good ideas is a touch too long), the vocal melodies are flat, lars is still lars, and the production is IDENTICAL to hardwired.
