Glad we could agree on this

That’s the thing: “in comparison to others”. If this was their only release, I’d be glazing all over it, but being their Xth album, it’s not really outstanding just very good.

A dawn to fear is also just staggeringly good. If this was some random debut then yeah itd be lauded but add it into this bands legendary and impeccable catalogue it falls a bit short. Cult of Luna do not really have a stinker in their discography,

True. Yeah, I revisited Dawn recently and had to re-bump that up. All of Salvation (5), SATH, The Beyond and Dawn (4.5s) are wholly essential in differing ways. The fact they have consistently reworked their formula and do enough to separate whilst retaining incredibly high standards, is a testament to their excellence.
Then, less consistent, but imo containing a greater sense of individuality and massive highlights, comes EK and Vertikal (4). That's the next tier. Mariner isn't really comparable to other CoL albums and certainly isn't my preferred incarnation of their sound, but it does have an element of uniqueness for obvious reasons.
This just doesn't feel as essential. It's enjoyable. It beats out a lot of stuff in this general realm. But I admit that the weight of comparison has been hella unkind to it, as much as I try and just enjoy it for what it is (and I do), that will always have some affect on how I regard it.

Like the albums still incredible by normal standards, cant really fault it for anything or anyone for loving it. I also find this one really hard to get into. I miss Dawns organ

idk when I want to hear some CoL and there are like 6 other superior options, what's a guy to do? There isn't an aspect of this album I would take over the competition. It's arguably one of their easiest to digest so maybe as an 'everyday listen', so as not to wear out their better albums. There, I found TLRN's true calling lol

Blasphemy would be saying SATH and Salvation are the worst pieces of music ever

I get joy out of the act of comparing things (so altho true, it goes both ways I guess). And such thoughts are mostly felt after the event in reflection, rather than constantly evaluating at the time (fortunately).

I jammed this twice today, and it has quite some great moments, but these feel like songs on a B-sides compilation where the listener wonders why they didn't make it to the album proper.
And I agree with Demon that it is a notch below Vertical and Kingdom. However, I disagree on Mariner, it is a different beast, but a huuuge one.

To be clear CoL are the ONLY band to attain 4 ratings of 4.5 or above. They are literally in a category of one. So if I’m overly critical here, then imagine how I deal with ‘lesser artists’ lol
