NeedleDrop wrong about most things

Any of the first three tracks or Other Language would be my favorite I think. I love the first half of Mombasa but not crazy about how it ends, which is probably an unpopular opinion.

I still really like OCHL even if I wish the bm was lessened even more than it was. NB is their most awkward in terms of songwriting, but it's still solid.

TheNeedleDrop is just really bad at Shoegaze and Dream Pop inspired music. Hum’s album is a cult classic too and he also gave it a 3. I’m not worried about any of that now. He’s just wrong with anything that has Shoegaze in it lol. And that Slowdive review a few years ago. He should just stick to Cardi B or whatever.

OCHL's artwork strangely fits the album perfectly, but yea its definitely their worst looking one.

It's up there with Eat the Elephant for worst album covers of the 2010s.

“NB is their most awkward in terms of songwriting, but it's still solid.”

I would almost agree with you but it still kinda works. Gifts for the Earth is probably the most awkward one but for some strange reason I listen to it more as early Underoath like “When the Sun Sleeps”. Maybe I give it leeway in that regard. I still feel it’s much more coherent than OCHL. That album was just all over the place. As if they were experimenting in real time. I appreciate it but I still find it as probably their weakest overall.

Gifts for the Earth is easily one of the better written tracks on that album (these guys' Foo Fighters sounding tunes, huh). Opener is the best, the decision to bridge it with a dodgy af guitar solo notwithstanding, and Luna might have been impressive if they hadn't tacked on a total snooze of bloatcoda. Come Back is kinda awkward and Baby Blue is plain embarrassing tbh

With NB I find myself preferring specific sections as opposed to whole songs. OCHL comes across better written and more emotional, and I actually found it pretty coherent and enjoyed the balance of metal and post-rock.

Gifts for the Earth is one of my favorite songs by these guys. Definitely has somewhat of an early Underoath vibe.

Seeing the word awkward thrown around a lot for New Bermuda, but I thought it flowed pretty well besides Baby Blue which does fit that description.

best album art in the metalgaze game is jesu, aaron turner is such a renaissance man

deafheaven's album art hasn't really done much for me, sunbather's art just felt like a rehash of the boris' pink album art for example.

outlander is up there for best album art in the metalgaze game too, really love the polaroid style pictures of industrial decay that they use

never thought of sunbather and pink in the same sentence before, but that figures. probably the only situation in which they should ever be associated with one another, don't think dfhvn will ever release anything on the same plane as pink

“Seeing the word awkward thrown around a lot for New Bermuda”

I think the issue with NB I have is that the band has never really been black metal but because they had that genre tag thrown around so much they felt they had to make a black metal album. It was never them nor their sound overall. Yeah, it has gorgeous moments and it still feels distinctively Deafheaven. But they’re best when they’re doing whatever the hell they want and making things the way they want to. NB felt like a fake friend trying to be someone they weren’t in order to fit in. Of course the same could be said about OCHL too. Sunbather and Infinite Granite are them doing whatever they want and not giving a shit. I guess that’s why I hold those two higher.

"deafheaven never gonna release something that makes me see the face of god like flood"

that was a given lol - pink is like maybe 5th best boris, which i think is a more realistic standard for trendgaze to aim for
