This is the best metal album of all time.

Yeah there’s probably 10-20 albums I’d put in the conversation. given the subjectivity the weird thing is definitely more the margin it’s ahead of most contenders by, as opposed to it being first right now. Guess they just had a moment

You see, one of those albums is very good but not even close to my AOTD conversation and the other isn’t my cup of tea at all. Now you can rip apart my taste till the cows come home, but I sure as hell ain’t a ‘casual’. Guess what I’m saying is, opinions/eye of the beholder and all that.

No doubt Demon. A bunch of stuff that would make my shortlist isn’t really well enough regarded here to be a common pick, like Ihsahn’s After

I would 5 this, if it wasn't for EiF.

I don’t get the thing where you only 5/5 one release from an artists discog. Just a personal thing. Depends if the artist in question maintains a very similar style throughout I guess, if so then I understand.

I would probably consider Shrines to be the best metal record of the last decade, although I would consider Ad Nauseam's debut, Gorguts' Colored Sands and Amerna's Mass VI to also be worthy of contention.

Demon I think it’s more just that the initial album gives you a point of reference for the next. If you love EiF, and relative to it you think this one has some flaws that without context you might not have considered, then rating lower makes sense

Album Rating: 4.5
I think it also depends on one's criteria for determining what might be a 5. If you judge albums from a single discography relative to each other, it can lead you to only 5 the very best of that discography, because of the comparative nature of your rating system.

i dont five two albums from the same artist either. its probably dumb but idk, it just feels weird.

If an artist has two 5s, they have two 5s. Most artists absolutely do not.
This is pretty good.

Yeah it definitely depends on one’s criteria, which is what I was saying. Some artists strike a particular chord that cannot (seemingly) be replicated, if said artist does that more than once (but in different ways), then slapping 5s on both is totally legitimate. Again, not saying this is THE way of doing things, just that it makes sense to me. 99.9% of artists could never achieve a 5 from me regardless.

I can understand a lesser rating for an otherwise flawless album if one feels like an imitation of the other, but this is distinct enough from EiF to be assessed on its own merits

That’s also what I was saying Jaq... probably didn’t communicate it well enough though.
