Lipa’s entire appeal (on this album cycle anyway) is as an empty vessel / blank canvas upon which a memory-idealisation of the more palatable parts of 80s-to-00s dance pop are projected. There’s nothing wrong with that. She might end up with a stronger character / performance concept in future, but criticising her for not having one misses the point here imho. It’s something Dannii Minogue understood very well - to be a successful club diva, your personality can’t overpower the sacred space of the club. It would be akin to a priest’s personality attempting to overpower the architecture of the Cathedral. It benefits neither the performer nor the environment.
