Yeah I think that's part of why this one has been easier to digest for opeth fans. They did a good job of integrating some of that classic opeth feel into their post watershed sound

How many of you rate an album after first listen? Do you have a minimum or does it depend on the album?

Album Rating: 4.5
I often do. I use Sput to track the new releases I've listened to. I usually do not go lower than a 2.5 (a 2.0 on extreme occasions) and not higher than a 3.5-4.0 on first listen though.

'How many of you rate an album after first listen? Do you have a minimum or does it depend on the album?'
Depends solely on the album in question yeah. If a release is truly terrible then it'll be a 'one-and-done' sort of deal, if I'm unsure I usually wait to give it a couple more spins. Sometimes I wait even longer if it's a long-term 'project' i.e. I know it'll part of my rotation for a while, so there's no sense it rating it too early. That's just how I like to do things, I understand some people rate earlier and then change their scores more frequently/dramatically.
On this subject I'm currently on an 8-spin 'no rating' streak with one album, which might be a record. This has drawbacks if you're forgetful though, I noticed one earlier that I'd completely forgotten to rate despite having a solid opinion on the release in question. I do sometimes make lists to mitigate this 'risk'.

Yeah exactly, if you're not careful with that they slip by unrated. But I think it totally depends on how you use Sput.

You can avoid all that by not rating at all!

Except you don't use Sput to keep track of your listening behaviour that way.

Not a huge fan of this even if the musicianship is amazing.
I recently discovered 'Garden of the Titans' so that's what I'm spinning atm

I like it but the question from previous albums remains - why is Mike trying so hard with his singing in the prog era, and why is he singing to me over the telephone?

'because he wants to growl but can't bring himself to do it. he's conflicted'
Having seen them live on their Sorceress tour it certainly doesn't look like he wants to growl anymore, lol. It's like stand and deliver, which sounds like a compliment, whereas in actuality it just means him standing there all nonchalant and summoning up a stock growl like someone hit play on a recording. It was amusing and technically proficient, but not all that exciting to witness. It was still a good time, just saying.
