Yeah this is definitely an improvement on Once More Round the Sun although I quite liked that album
Fantano's review just sounds like him whining about the album being a 90s worship album even tho I think that entire point is him really reaching. He just nitpicks the fuck out of this album even tho he's given praise to albums that supposedly also do these kinda 90s or some other era of music worship in the past, most notably that Swain album which was in his top 50 last year which was way more 90s/grunge worship than he claims this Mastodon album is

The hunter is by far their worst imo

Also like how Fantano conveniently ignores the underlying theme/story of overcoming and dealing with a loved one becoming diagnosed with cancer to tear apart the lyrics

I prefer Once More over this

I'd personally prefer to listen to Once More just because I find the production on that more listenable

Then what's wrong with my take on his review when he literally spends a majority of the review criticizing it for being 90s worship and having "cheesy" lyrics while completely ignoring its concept

it's concept does not distract from the fact that the lyrics are terrible
red jumpsuit apparatus had a good concept/meaning behind face down, but that doesn't mean the lyrics aren't trash

It's one thing to say the lyrics are trash while acknowledging the concept, but he ignores it all together in his entire review which is what bugs me most

and as for this being 90s worship, it's true
other bands (such as swain that you mentioned) are able to adapt and evolve their sound to the point where it sounds natural, whereas as this does not sound right at all, the vocals are terrible, the songwriting is lazy, and as he brings up in the review they seem to be constantly pushing this direction now when their best and more popular records follow the soun that they actuially pioneered
90s worship can be done well or at least sound natural, this just sounds forced and cheesy

Accept he doesn't. He spent the majority of the review talking about how it was boring and just Mastodon going through the numbers with a poppier take. He said it was a step down from their previous record. Yes I admit I kind of scratched my head towards the end when he brought up 90's influences but that was like 2 minutes of a 15 minute review. And he wasn't that wrong either, it was just a bit of a stretch.
The lyrics ARE cheesy. The problem with this album is it's not really THAT much of a concept. It's not very strong in that regard. Like there's 3 or 4 songs where I remember lyrics that were very clearly about death and cancer, but besides that they weren't very descript. They were generic, cheesy, non-strong lyrics that could be molded to be about absolutely anything. For fuck's sake at least Crack the Skye's opening track made me feel things. The tone in that was very clear. the "concept" of this record is to occasionally insert sadboi lyrics with a tone that doesn't match the lyrics at all. they're so non-offensive, so NOT standout. and most of the lyrics are trash.

i mean if you want melonhead to ramble on for 20 minutes about how the lyrics are insufficiently worked as to represent the concept the band wanted to create then on your own head be it but i'd rather read all the fanboys get upset in the comment section
