You read way too much into me and my ratings. I've been listening to metal for 20 years. Just because I don't understand all the technicalities behind the music and the instrumentation doesn't mean I can't differentiate between what I like and what I don't, or what genre something sounds like to me.



Different bands do different things with "blasts and trems" but black metal at its heart is a wall of sound punctuated by subtle changes in pitch and tone, so that it feels like multiple variations of a single long note rather than a bunch of different notes.



That's how I interpret it and trying to force a definitive definition onto something as fluid, creative, and perspective-based as music is silly.

Right, but it's just my interpretation. I don't think that perspective had to apply to anyone else, it's just when I hear that, which is what I hear in those sections, it sounds like other songs from albums that everyone else considers black metal.



Old school metal is boring as hell to me. I'm not going to rate something I can't even get though one sitting of. I've tried plenty of classic metal albums, most do nothing for me. Again, reading too much into my ratings.



Didn't know about Fenriz, that's interesting info. But it has little effect on my personal interpretation. Like I said, I've listened to tons of bm, so when I hear a song or section that sounds like bm to me, then I call it that, because that's what it sounds like. To me.
