I'm definetly happy with this album but I do hope they do something a little different next album, I can definetly see how this album is very redundennt for some people.

Some of these songs sound a bit different as opposed to a lot of their other material. I'm kind of glad they're going a little softer.

But not different or bold enough though. This is a really safe album, and they're resting in a comfort zone here.

I kinda agree with that. As much as I enjoyed this there wasn't anything that was groundbreaking for Deftones in general. Still though, it doesn't mean any of the songs were bad.

The majority of it is filled with underwhelming moments. But it has its relative highlights like Rubicon, Geometric Headdress, and Xenon.

Lets be honest though deftones have never been a band to use Ulver style experimentation or take big risks musically. S/T is probably the boldest album they've made after white pony and even that wasnt extremely different from their past work. Frankly Im not sure why they're often described as being experimental.

@Jtswope Well I didn't say it was a night and day difference. I don't think it's anything particularly bold, but they definitely tweaked their sound a bit here. Much appreciated there, but surely people will hate it, as evidenced by the many 2s.

definitely experimental for a radio rock band, but yeah in the grand scheme of things i wouldnt say these guys are particularly innovative.

@Mongi I know you didn't pal, just saying I personally wish they took it further.

the hooks aren't that good and the riffs especially on Doomed User, while pretty aggressive and crunchy, doesn't work that well with the song structure and ends up sounding rather disjointed. Hearts/Wires is a good track tho, i liked that one.

Shit i just listened to Smile for the first time and fuck me its killer, now I too wish they would master and release their material from Eros sessions, even if its not enough to make a full album. I think shelving Chi's last material for good would actually be a fairly distasteful move. Chances are having just realeased Gore they're not even going to think about it for a year or 2

"...just saying I personally wish they took it further."
I think they'll get there one day. I personally believe that the way DE and KNY turned out was largely due to the fact that they had lost & gained a new member of the band and were just wanting to jam and figure out one another's styles again. Now that they've had a few years working together, I imagine they'll be only getting more experimental. This album shows them heading in that direction a bit. I'd bet the next album would take it a step further.

Yeah I feel like they definitely pushed themselves here to experiment ( robot vocals on acid hologram, technical riffing on pittura) and etc. Some good atmosphere and good use of Frank Delgado on tracks like xenon during the verse. It's a grower of an album for sure
