It's really staggering that 'Portal of I' is still rated evenly with this album, when Citadel is a vastly more complete and consistent album.

Similar to how I feel about most BTBAM, this type of music just seems a bit empty. Like, no engaging direction, just a lot of cool pieces stitched together. It is really pleasing and interesting but, just a bit empty.
I think this is basically a more pleasing style of what BTBAM does. So I guess I like this a bit more.

^ I think this is a good explanation of why i don't really like this style of progressive metal

Now you're gonna tell me that guitars are overused, eh?

Agreed. BTBAM are far more unnecessary and have fewer quiet moments.

A 'straight lie' is a semi-idiomatic phrase used to describe an untruth that has absolutely no element of truth in it, as opposed to untruths that blend truthful aspects. Take your reductionism elsewhere.

Whilst I didn't find this as impressive as the band's excellent debut album, I still think it's a sound progression in both sound and songwriting. The violin parts for me seem a little more focused and therefore the transition from more brutal, extreme musicianship to lighter sounds feels mostly natural. I didn't really see why it was necessary for the shorter songs (i.e., "Wyrmholes" and "Reveries from the Stained Glass Womb", but I did quite like the closing interlude) to be on the album, all they did was remind me of how great the longer tracks were. That said, it's one step closer for Ne Obliviscaris attaining a more promising future than ever before, and on this evidence they deserve it.

>I don't feel like NeO are screaming/growling for the sake of it either
Funny thing about that is, the screaming in this album seemed so deliberately/mindfully placed it was
almost like it didn't need to be there in the first place. It's hard to explain exactly, but I don't feel
the album in general was aggressive enough to be helped much by occasional harsh vocals.
But yeah, Buried's vocalist bores me to death when he's screaming, like he's just screaming for the sake of
it or because he's supposed to in a progressive metal band. He doesn't have much of a dynamic element in
that respect, but he's pretty good when singing.
