I would’ve also loved to have been present for that legendary performance

Album still rules after all these years. This is their absolute best, without a shadow of a doubt.

Ya I’m gonna have to go with LIBAD too, this is a very close second tho and literally a top 5 metalcore album of all time

Chapter Four is also one of their best songs, idk if you’d call it a solo since there’s vocals over it but Syn’s leads in the back half are absolutely insane. Dude is one of the best to ever pick up a guitar.

This might have grown off me a decent bit. Epic album, killer riffs, hooks for days, but the replay value suffers because the production feels so dry and shallow. Especially in IWSYT Part 2, it has everything to be a perfect metalcore song but just sounds damn annoying.

A million times better than their debut honestly. And agreed that Synyster is one of the GOATed lead guitarists.

It does indeed! I'm gonna reassess the rating after hearing City of Evil again, but this might go up a bit too. So many catchy leads m//

Honestly, StST had better production.

Yee it definitely sounds chunkier, and I like that the bass is mixed much higher in StST. But the songwriting and vocals on here are so much better imo.

3/4 agreed. StST has a lot of cool moments, that bass solo section in Lips of Deceit, wild Valary sighting in The Art of Subconscious Illusion and the entirety of Turn the Other Way among others, but here almost all the songs are instant hits.
Not so sure about the vocals. I prefer the debut when it comes to screams, they sound rawer and more lively. The singing though, this one took it to another level. The first verse in Unholy Confessions is one of the top Shadows moments ever.

Unholy Confessions does indeed slap! I think I prefer the singing to the screaming though, but that's also probably a side effect of City of Evil being the first album I heard from them back in the day. The screaming is solid, but the singing just pops more for me.

My convoluted phrasing backstabbed me again. I actually prefer the singing to the screaming too. Matt's cleans here are at their historical peak... my goodness, there's so much power in them. But the screams are really annoying as opposed to StST and even the rare ones on the later albums, and it ruins some songs like I Won't See You Tonight Part 2.

I don’t agree on the screams, I think he sounds great… but I do agree on the cleans. I don’t think it’s “technically” his best performance but his singing on the back half of I Won’t See You Tonight Part 1 is possibly the most powerful moment in their entire discography
