This is a really intriguing band, but I think they get too much credit. So much of it is boring riffs that are repeated for minutes. People judge other supposedly terrible metalcore/deathcore bands for using so many breakdowns and not being creative, yet Meshuggah is nearly just drawn out breakdowns and there are rarely any creative moments, especially in Chaosphere and Nothing, and they get so much praise. The rare creative moments are really cool, and if the band had implemented more into their music, I'd be in love.
If that is the point (to be repetitive and boring), then give breakdowny -core bands some slack because they have their "point" too. It does seem like because Meshuggah doesn't fit in that category, haters aren't drawn to it as much. It is mostly true fans rating because naturally this kind of band wouldn't attract a lot of negativity for being, well, harmless. If a band like Suicide Silence were the ones who originally released this album, "Nothing," but with their vocalist and instruments, it would easily be rated under a 3 for being a boring and uncreative album by a "bad" deathcore band trying to sound mature.
Still going to rate every Meshuggah album. They aren't terrible so I'll just go with it.

You make a point but i don't throughly agree with it. It is true that some core bands are looked down
way too much for what they do, but still Meshuggah are a different type of band. Meshuggah is
Meshuggah, it doesn't feel like anything core, anything djent or wtv. Meshuggah feels like Meshuggah.
And "repetitive and boring"? I beg to differ. They do it all in a unique way that might be mistaken
for that ok. But as far as i see it, their music is nothing but incredibly atmospheric and
hypnotizing.

I get that what they do is unique, but once you sit down and get a few tracks in, even what first seemed unique is now being over done song by song.
We are both hearing the same thing. Only thing is, you are being "hypnotized," I am being bored. I am hearing literally the same thing over and over again, and half the time it isn't even exciting.
But I still respect the fans and the band, and that is something too many people fail to do for the -core bands that I enjoy. They shit all over them. Asking Alexandria is apparently shit and I get disrespected for rating one of their albums 4. Guess what, the band does stuff that I like and enjoy, just as it is with people and Meshuggah.

mfw useless comparison. Meshuggah brought a lot of new stuff on the table - it's like half of the metal scene wouldn't be what it is today. Anyway I kinda agree a full Meshuggah lp can be pretty boring. The only one I truly enjoy from start to finish is Chaosphere - but then again, every disc has at least 3-4 amazing tracks you just can't avoid. Ah, and "I" is fucking amazing.

Yeah either that or i actually feel their music differently. There's no free pass in this, once you know the band well there's no mistaking them for anything. I'd say the closest to Meshuggah's formula was Uneven Structure's 8 and even that one was meh imo. It IS atmospheric as fuck. This is just a matter of perception, the mechanical nature of their sound makes something work for me and for a lot of people. It doesn't to you, all ok.

Maybe that is it. I have heard and grew up with so many newer metal bands that were influenced by Meshuggah that when I finally go to Meshuggah, they don't seem quite as unique. They are the ones that actually invented many of those timings and riffs. I wonder what it was like to grow up with and hear the first Meshuggah albums, when there was literally no one else doing what they did.

You think the high ratings are more of a show of respect for the band's influence and for those few really good songs? Or do you guys really enjoy every minute?
Edit: Damn, the ending of Sum in Catch33 conflicts my insides. It wants to be a happy song but is so damn dark.

I fucking love 8 - the 2013 version is so good. Uneven Structure are so good in general and their new release is already AOTY, but whatever
I totally agree with Jac though
