Again, I don't understand the wank argument. There's a lot more heavy riffing than outright noodling here

The only weak points of this record for me are the lyrics and the vocal delivery. The instrumental work and production are stellar.

I remember hearing a performance of As I Am from 2015, and James' vocals were so weak compared to the instrumental work :[ Luckily, he was actually really good on The Astonishing... but too bad that album was pretty damn boring otherwise

I still haven't heard The Astonishing. I don't know when I'll get around to that.

I'd suggest not listening to it, lol. It's so bland and cheesy, and while I appreciate them cutting down on the wank, the entire thing is just too fucking bloated and dull

Ugh. That's unfortunate. They really should have gone on hiatus like Portnoy wanted to.

Aspired guitar wankers and wannabe musicians around the world, take notice. This is the album you all need to check.

James's vocals have always been the weakest part of DT. This album is pretty all right though.

I'm a very big DT fan, but I never understood the love for the solo section in ItNoG. I feel like it adds totally nothing to the song as it comes totally out of nowhere in a totally different feel than the rest of the song. It's like you put a reggae riff on a black metal record. Sure the riff can be great, but it makes no sense with tye rest. That solo is where the mindless wankery claim is most justified to me. It drags the song down a lot.

The wank isn't even the part of this album that bothers me the most... the problem I have is with the stupid macho posturing on most of the songs. The chorus of Endless Sacrifice is so nu-metal it's hilarious

I like this album. Maybe because it was my first encounter with the band and what I had been looking for without really knowing it.

Yup, it has some obvious flaws but I could always enjoy it.

Same here. I think it's very flawed, but I still like it quite a lot. But it's also very nostalgic for me :]
