Maxinquaye and Blue Lines are best trip hop, Dummy is up there too

next tier you have Mezz, the other two Portishead, and this - each of those is close to classic but missing that last touch of magic for the .5 bump

I guess ordered I’d go:

1. Maxinquaye

2. Blue Lines

3. Dummy

4. Endtroducing

5. Mezzanine

6. Third

7. Portishead

8. Protection

Mezzanine and dummy are indisputible. The third spot I still flop around on. There are a lot of very arguable contenders

By indisputible I mean in terms of influence

Would you say Mezzanine was more influential than Blue Lines? That album started the whole thing. I guess you could make a case for both of them, but I wouldn't say it's indisputable.

My order actually reads as the best in terms of which to smoke to except Third would definitely be in last place

Yeah switch Third and Protection and that’s the smokers guide

The top 3, Mezzanine and Protection are the only ones you can really fuck to

Top 3 are best for smoking AND fucking so really they have to be the top 3

@trif I guess that depends on which phase of trip hop ur referring to. I think you can make an argument either way depending on if you're talking about the creation of trip hop or the transition of trip hop into the quintessential dark broody sound. So I guess you could make two seperate lists

For me mezz and dummy are indisputible for phase 2 of trip hop which is one of my fav musical movements ever

Yeah I guess that's true. Either way, both rule so hard.

I've always thought 100th Window was super mega sex music by the way, especially Butterfly Caught. Underrated album too.

I had a gf who used to insist on playing Angel and Risingson on repeat in the sack - something about those two tunes she couldn't resist

I've got a deep-ish voice but I'm no Daddy G, didn't let it make me feel threatened

It's super sexy music agreed, those vibes and both Daddy G's and 3D's voice, man... She had great taste.

You know I do love 100th window but it has a very homogeneous quality to it that always keeps it on the low end of my MA rankings. Most of the songs are almost interchangeable as highlights, which makes it consistent in a sense, but also less memorable

But yeah I agree that for pioneering trip hop records it would make more sense to go with blue lines. But the second movement is usually what I think of as what really separates trip hop from its dub, hip hop, and alt roots

Yeah I get that, that's a totally valid reason too for picking Mezzanine. It basically reinvented the genre, introduced a few now well known elements.

And that's my major issue with 100th Window too, very homogenous indeed, but that makes it even better as a sex soundtrack haha! Not too distracting and the vibe is delish.
