"and im not saying that as a negative, i love me some goofy ass early 90s and late 80s shit but"

How are tracks like On The Run, ill street blues, Train Robbery etc goofy to you? That album is just as hard if not harder than 4, 5, 6

I'd imagine looking back at this era you'd be hard pressed to find a rapper doing this style on the East Coast that wasn't highly influenced by the stuff Kool G and Polo did together. And agreed that the backpack stuff gets more discussion around here. When I left sput for a few years and came back with my Memphis Underground list I was honestly shocked the userbase here had any interest in it at all. Even though hip hop still isn't the main focus here sput has definitely taken major strides in jamming more rap as opposed to back in 07 though when it was like pulling teeth to convince a wide majority that rap was even music lol

obviously. that doesn't make that any less of a transitional sound period.

Pots must have mistaken Live and Let Die for their first album or smth. No way he was thinking of tracks like this:

Yeah, I'm happy with sput's hip hop userbase as far as discussion is concerned, but I feel it could be more widespread all the same. I obviously love all the rock and metal worship that happens here but I wish the rest of music could come along with it.

im not saying the lyrical content hadn't taken that jump yet. i'm saying the beats were in a transitional period, as was the cadence and delivery of the rhymes.

I think we can end this debate to all come together and agree that Ganksta NIP- South Park Psycho is the most innovative and classic rap album of all time!

https://youtu.be/Rnsjp2B5QbY

And yeah I'd love it if we could get more in depth discussion on some Southern rap or underground midwest and west coast stuff here.
I spent years nerding out over obscure local hip hop in all of the different regions those years that I wasn't frequenting here and apart from a few users I've come across since coming back there's very few to nerd out with. Drifter has shot me some cool recs over the past year or so though. Never been.a shortage of nerding out over death metal here though so at least that half of me is highly satisfied

Lmao, I haven't heard a full Kool G. Rap project. So I hesitate to have a full opinion on the convo, but you're acting like this shit is Shook Ones Pt 2 or sum. I totally see where Pots is coming from with the cheese statement, it's not very dark at all but it is good.

the beats are so much brighter and jammy than anything from '93 on and the rap delivery is so much more basic than what rapping evolved into from then on too

ok but I wasn't talking about the beats I was talking about his style of rap and literally every 90s street rapper would get on their knees and kiss G Rap's ring if you asked them who their biggest influence was

"I totally see where Pots is coming from with the cheese statement, it's not very dark at all but it is good."

thank you. just having violent lyrics doesn't mean that shit matches the tone and production style of early black moon, mobb deep, big l, nas, wu tang etc etc etc
