ngl i have a really hard time getting into the guitar tone of the og swedish death metal. I get it, it's trve swedish dm, but it's grating as fuck. The album is solid though regardless.

Better for the production to be grating than flat out weak.

Idk the og stuff doesn't hit me nearly as hard as more newer cleaner production metal. Call me a poser all you want but back in the 80s, 90s metal production was a brand new thing that I think gradually increased in quality since then, doesn't mean the songs were bad or any better than newer stuff, but there's a noticeable increase in production quality since then and I would rather listen to that much more than older production.

The Boss pedal sound is awesome but the genre is oversaturated with it.

That's fair. I just think that the muddier sound fits death metal better than the more clean kind of production, especially with this kind of dm. Gives it an angry, sinister feel.

I agree with that to an extent and I understand why sounding like this would be beneficial for certain bands, and even just og metal production in general, but it's not something I grew up with really. Whenever I hear older production like this I just don't feel like listening to it as much as something cleaner. Really depends on the band and album though.

Yeah it depends for sure. I tend to dig production like this a lot but there’s newer albums with great production that fits perfectly also.

Don't get me wrong, I like clean production when it's done right. My main issue with it is that when it's done wrong, it sounds flat and boring. Sucks the life out of the music.

You could say the same thing for older production. I personally grew up in a time where the newer production metal was way more prevalent and normal so I'm more used to that than this kind of stuff but I appreciate and enjoy most stuff from this time too.

The guitars on this are so crunchy though I love it.

And yeah first song is killer, somewhere around ~3:10-3:15 or so those riffs are fucking legendary.

I prefer the guitar sound and vocals of Left Hand Path to this. That album will always trump this imo

They’re about equal for me. Would prob take this one by a small margin if I absolutely had to pick.
