Forgot my earplugs so I stood in the back like a totally cool outsider and not just some goof. Man Sunbather goes so hard live.

Isn’t it crazy how this record didn’t ruin black metal like so many neckbeards thought it would

It's such an inoffensive album idk how people even got upset over it in the first place lol. Then again trve cvlt black metalheads are probably the edgiest people in existence so

the anti-hipster bm climate was real in that period--the mix of burgeoning post-black and a growing folky NW american scene combined just really pissed off the weirdo elitists because they totally threw out the old bm orthodoxies.

dunno man but countless normie folk i knew loved this album and still fuck with this band so that's prolly the main reason why

That’s a good thing though! That creates a pipeline for them to get into the classics. Elitists are weird in they want classics or bands they like to be appreciated but they rebel against the avenues that drive people towards also appreciating them.

Was the concern that this aesthetic would catch on and the next minute the depressive suicidal black metal scene would be dressing in peach salmon pink hipster clothes playing in major key and blowing pixie dust at each other? That’s probably an improvement

Just here to say album is still pretty good

it was mostly a sort of allegation of "genre gentrification" from the kvlt kids in that they didn't want indie rock hipsters and screamo kids watering down the genre with cleaner prod, twinkly guitars, and flannel shirts. so just elitists trying to keep everything orthodox for no reason again.

I see

not into bm at all, but were the fears justified in the end? how's the scene now, did it change because of this?

elements of this movement were undoubtedly folded into a lot of the modern bm canon, but no obvsly the shitlords were just whining about nonsense they made up. lots of krieg bands just replaced old 90's style ambience with post-rock and are no less trve.
