It doesn't matter one bit how much it seems like a mess now, how much better or worse their catalogue was prior or post, no matter how engrossing or annoying or mesmerizing or embarrassing anyone thinks it is NOW.



THEN it raised the fucking bar. EVERYONE responded. EVERYONE had to up their game. EVERYONE was talking about it, one way or another.



It was pivotal, like it or not. And you can't change what is was, no matter how much you don't like it.

Yep. Colors was a real benchmark back then... it was the album that most extreme prog metal bands were trying to top at the time. Hell, even Traced in Air had some hints of the album here and there - just listen to the "floating toward the sun" part in Sun of Nothing and listen to one of the heavier bits of TiA for comparison. There's a reason this record appears on so many "best metal albums" lists
