Yeah, that's true.
Funny how some albums are simply the shade of other albums. After this, IR, and Kid A, AMSP had a lot to live up to. In some aspects it did, but on others, it didn't.
Kinda like Pink Floyd with The Wall, actually.

@ALA
Lmao I already asked my Dad but he very busy rn. He said he'll def lend it so I can give it a spin tho.
Also, I'm saying The Wall didn't live up musically to PF's recent releases. And, yes, it's overrated AF.

The Wall is technically their highest selling when you look at the fact that it's a double album and so literally double the sales. Other than that, DSOTM would be their highest selling

read through most of the last conversation and I have to agree, RH are one of the most consistent bands ever, constantly pumping out 4/5 or greater albums (all included except for Pablo). IR is my favorite and their newest album lives up to atleast a 4/5 (Ful Stop being the greatest achievment on the album)

Well it is kind of silly to compare Nirvana to Radiohead in terms of consistency as they had 3 albums and RH have 9.

Saying you dislike Nirvana is the same as saying you dislike The Beatles...or the Sopranos...or Star Wars. It's cool, you can say that, but their legend is assured. "I hate a really really beyond popular thing" The only response? "Ok" It leads to no discussion, the discussion was completed a long time ago and the conclusions have been reached - they were an incredible band and one of the most popular of all time. It's written in stone.

I think in some cases its that something has been a bit ruined for you rather than an established classic being lacking. Star Wars was never one of my all time favourite films. How was I introduced to it? Watching it on the telly at Christmas in between stuffing my face, playing that computer game I'd been waiting for all year, etc. I never watched it for the first time in the cinema.
People approach Nirvana on this site with untold baggage - you know Kurt would end up killing himself, you've heard a million newer bands inspired by Nirvana, youre listening to a band regarded as one of the greats when back in '91 they were unheard of underdogs, you're listening to Nevermind as one of 12 other classic albums that month in your listening schedule...its not ideal. It's highly likely the magic won't happen for every listener in that environment.

or maybe just people don't like stuff that isn't as good as a lot of people originally thought due to circumstances making them ignore it's weak points (eg Star Wars being absolutely terrible but being a huge spectacle and a leap forward for special effects eg = masterpiece in most's eyes)

all opinions are subjective but when there's that much of a groundswell of opinion you're effectively saying "Elvis was shit" - the only response is 'ok'
Your comment is saying the magic of Star Wars isn't magic - you see the problem with this... :/
The magic is its own thing, you aren't rating the music, no one is, it's whether you get the magic - because it's been established thars magic in them hills. No one can really argue Elvis was shit because the whole story has been told and people found something magical in him. I don't really care for Elvis but saying that to one of the millions of Elvis fans...its all passed into legend.

nothing really has that magic though. a whole bunch of people believing something is good is worth no more than just one person believing something is good, opinions don't play build-ups like that. it's maybe that the time + place of something's release is especially kind to it so that a whole bunch of people have good memories with it, or at the most it's so generically enjoyable that there's very few people who hate it but in the end they're just more circumstances

Intellectualise it, theorise over it...best to let it go. Nirvana captured that certain magic that only a handful of cultural phenomena create every decade, the only question is whether you felt it and of course you can't force it.
The music helped to build the magic but it's only one ingredient and the package can't be broken down just to the music for that massive group of people who believed it.
People tend to be pretty discerning over these phenomena imo though, they rarely say there's something magic in some worthless shite. Elvis, Sinatra, The Beatles, Bowie, MJ...you have to admit they all had something there...
Of course the worrying thing is these phenomena seem to be slowing up - where's the magic over the last couple of decades? Game of Thrones is maybe close? The Harry Potter books? Pokemon? Kanye bleeding West? Dem well rendered Gorillaz? As Zak said its no wonder there is no current reference point for this.

I'm not denying all those artists had something. I'm saying to reduce it to a phrase as wishy-washy as magic is to deny pretty much every logical reason of what it was. It's like saying the reason we have electricity in our homes is because of "that special power juice". It's not wrong, but it's basic and you're denying all intellectual discussion of it - in your own words there's not much to say but 'ok'
I think what you call the magic is really just a combination of things which are or were a) nostalgic, b) significant because of time/place context or c) new in some fascinating way. None of qualities necessarily makes a product good, it just makes it far easier for everyone involved to ignore the bad bits and praise it as 'magic' or 'the real deal' or whatever other vagueisms you wanna throw on it
I could name a fair few shows that are (quote unquote because anyone who says this 100% seriously is deluded) """objectively""" better than Star Wars or Game of Thrones and plenty of albums that are better than Nevermind, but they don't have the benefit of the cultural push behind him and so they'll never be recognised on the same level. basically sometimes the stars align and artists just get lucky with the right place right time, it's something you can't predict or replicate but it's not indicative of quality

However Row there's also something to be said about the shared experience of culture - sure, there are better movies than Star Wars and better albums than Nevermind, but the way those pieces of art fit into a greater cultural context makes them significantly more powerful.
The importance of art is influenced as much by its time and place as it is by the craft involved. Sure the pure "objective quality" of art doesn't really have to do with its context but the way it affects us does.

Row there isn't usually a cynical push behind these phenomena - GoT first season wasn't pushed that much, Nirvana were a small unheard of band before their first hit broke, no one involved in Star Wars expected it to become what it did...none of them are One Direction. I don't believe they're a case of bandwagon jumping to that huge a degree either because if you try and create that artificially it doesn't usually work.
The magic is a real thing because that is what you are wrestling with whether you like it or not when you talk about the band being overrated or terrible or anything else. I mean sure you can say you don't like their snare sound or whatever but that's again like saying you dislike Darth Vader's costume design. The magic is bigger and that's what you're up against.
I think Black Sabbath are pretty bad for the most part but I'd never call them shit or deny their magic, they created something, something bigger than the fact I find most of their songs tedious and Ozzy's vocals absolutely laughable. They're a classic band lol
