Without enforcing a particular interpretation, I'd like to think your perspective on the "flowers and sunshine" nature of this album might change with time. The most obvious thing to point to in this regard is the lyrics of the first track

I mean, I had 1 listen-through so you're right that will probably change with time (as I get more accustomed to the lyrics), but I still stand my point that this sounds like flowers and sunshine (maybe even to a fault).

this is so overblown, pop psych how underwhelming, so many others doing the right way, not mainstream rubbage as this is

that being said it is an enjoyable listen, but not earth shaking as you lemmings have said

yes I realize the song is to a lover in prison (after looking up the lyrics). still doesn't change my opinion though, even the lyrics sound really optimistic despite the bleak situation

I'm in the midst of trying to figure out what role lyrics play in what we call "music", but even disregarding the words, there are plenty notes of sonic melancholy to me here: A Rose For Emily, Maybe After He's Gone, Beechwood Park, Brief Candles, Hung Up On a Dream (that's 5 of the first 6 songs whoops lol)--it seems like a complex mixture of tones! But different strokes

That dissonant note they hum before the chorus in "Care of Cell 44" sort of seems like a microcosm of this album's emotional valence 4 me

Clearly you're right In some sense though, and the album is shot through with "sunshine and flowers"-type instrumentation and arrangements. Interesting stuff

never noticed those subtle touches robert....I guess I'll have to relisten with those comments in mind. But yeah that's basically my point, instrumentation and vocal melodies seem very bright and cheery and poppy

There's nothing you can do

But not for you

As the years go by

She will grow old and die

The roses in her garden fade away

Not one left for her grave

Not a rose of Emily ~
