I am so glad that I held out of hearing any of the songs before my initial listen when this dropped.

Giving this another listen this morning and goddamn does it just keep hitting harder. This definitely has the possibility of becoming a 5. You're totally right wildcard, this hits at disullisioned apathy so well. Secret History/Hell 99 is such an insane way to open a record. To toot this site's own mythology, it really is almost Sowing Season-esque lol

I feel like it's a full-circle moment for my time on this site. Feels like a more modern version of the sort of angst-ridden alt-rock that initially drew me to Sputnik. This is possibly, honestly, a little bit better than those classics IMO. Time will tell.

"Disullisioned apathy" is definitely the perfect descriptor.

Also, want to reiterate.....

Gratitude almost not making the cut is insane lol It's such a masterpiece. Why was it almost left off?

Gratitude is probably tied for my 3rd favorite here, but I agree that it's crazy it was almost left off. Apparently there were huge disagreements within the band on how it should be produced but...when you're sitting on an absolute ace like that, getting it out to people in some way shape or form is priority #1 lol.

Unless the goal was to leave it off this album, perfect it/come to an agreement, then release in the future.

But I'm glad it's on the self-titled. It's a perfect fit.

That noisy section in the middle does such a good job of conveying nothingness lol and then BAM back to some sick ass hooks

Greyhound is my other #3 that ties with Gratitude. Both such great songs in very different ways. Have to stick with Secret History and Hell 99 as my top two, though. Hearing them back to back for the first time (via promo, so this was before anyone else heard it and before Hell 99 was a single) is an experience I'll truly never forget in my lifetime. I was so blown away that I just had to pause it and sit there for a few minutes to recollect myself.

Not that Draw Down the Moon is bad or anything, but it's just so funny that they went from Nearer My God to that and then to this lol

It’s absolutely insane that they went from basically pop rock with some indie flair to whatever the fuck this is.

But yes I still love DDTM very much, just not as much as this

I have a really weird relationship with this album where tracks 1-4, 8 and 9 are fantastic and the rest I don't care for...

it's hard for me to rate this higher as I never return to the album, only to specific songs, that being said it made me appreciate this band even more and got me more excited about their future

Cry Baby and Dead Cat are the weakest here. I still enjoy them, but I can easily recognize that they have less going for them than the other tracks.

Cleaning is too emotionally potent for me to dismiss. Barking is a bit formulaic by this album's standards, but it's still a minor bop.

The rest is absolute fire IMO.
