The songwriting on here is def better than Close but I'll agree that Close has better production. None of these songs just wander aimlessly though that's nuts lol. I think you just need to listen to this a few more times tbh, the songwriting here is more complex than Close so maybe you just need more listens to let it sink in? Idk, I mean what songs do you feel wander aimlessly? And there's def a lot of pinch harmonics here but that's pretty much every Immolation album.
At least you bumped it, 4 is forgivable.

Na I think the songwriting here is by far their best. Not that either of those albums have bad songwriting because they don't, but this is def better imo.

"what songs do you feel wander aimlessly?"
I Feel Nothing is the main one. It just bounces around from boring riff to boring riff, not really going anywhere. Doesn't help that the production makes it hard to hear anything but fuzz from the guitars. The song gets better, but yeah those first two minutes just make me...feel nothing. lol. The next song, Away From God, isn't much better. that main riff is just squeal squeal squeal squeal, then the drums sloppily fumble around, then squeal x5, then sloppy drums. Again, it picks up later in the song. But it starts really rough. Neither song feel purpose-driven, whereas everything on CtaWB feels like it fits perfectly into the big picture and is necessary in getting you to the destination. There's a little more purpose and urgency I guess

That closing track to World Below is ungodly

Yeah, fuckin iconic. To be fair, the closing track here is amazing too. Probably the best song on the record

Idk dude, Away From God is killer all the way through. Easily one of the best songs on this album. Sloppy drumming? What??? No way dude. I Feel Nothing is similarly coherent, there's not a riff or anything on those songs (or this album) that doesn't have purpose.
I think your problem is really just with the production. Like the pinch harmonics, I have a feeling you just don't like how they sound on this record. And the way you describe the guitars as "fuzz" -- I don't know man, I don't feel that way at all. I think the guitars are perfectly clear. They could sound better yeah but it's not hard to hear them or to make out the riffs. It's the drums that are most affected by the production. I think you need to jam this with some good headphones or something.

I thought this sounded familiar. We had this conversation before a few pages back haha
"I do love his squeals, but I feel like it’s overkill on this record. Plus the mixing makes them more listenable and less painful on CtaWB"
"I have to turn the volume down specifically for Away From God because the constant squeals wreck my eardrums."
"I can't even listen to this in the car. The guitars are so loud yet muffled it sounds like they're throwing up all over themselves."
I still can't agree at all, and I've never known anyone to think the production here was *that* bad, but for whatever reason it just really, really doesn't sit well with you lol.

Hahaha nice find, short term memory loss on my part. At least I’m consistent! And yeah those comments are especially true when listening in my car, it’s not as bad when using headphones. But still noticeably worse than CtaWB. Every riff on that album is so memorable

To be fair though, there's a valid argument for any of their first four albums to be their best.

Yeah I’m of the opinion that they have no bad album. Even KoC kicks ass, lets be real.
